About The Independence by Design™ Podcast
Hey there, I’m Ryan Tansom. I know firsthand what it’s like to feel stuck in the daily grind of running a business. Back in 2009, I jumped into my family’s $21M company when we were losing nearly $1M a year. Over five years, we turned it around and sold it for eight figures—but the journey left me with more questions than answers.
That experience taught me the hard truths about time, cash flow, and wealth—and the one thing most owners don’t have: a roadmap to build a business that truly works for them.
On this podcast, I bring together everything I’ve learned—through 425+ interviews with brilliant minds like Chris Voss, Bo Burlingham, and Mike Michalowicz, and through my own experiences. Whether we’re diving into financial frameworks, breaking down valuations, or hearing raw, unfiltered stories from other owners, my goal is to give you insights you can act on.
If you’re ready to escape the daily grind, make better decisions, and finally design a business that works for you, this is your place.
Working with Ryan has been revolutionary. I have more clarity and less anxiety regarding the financial health of my business. I’m so grateful that I can now use my new mindset, tools and knowledge to grow my company’s equity value.
Steve Schaffer
Owner, Schaffer Manufacturing
The most concrete business practice I learned and adopted in Ryan's workshop was starting to think about our company as a financial asset and realizing we can forecast the business’s value into the future. We now understand that the future cash flow and equity value are the real metrics behind the health of the company.
Anne Dougherty
Owner, ILLUME Advising
As a business owner, I sometimes get into a rhythm or maybe a rut and do things in a certain way, almost methodically. Ryan's workshop allowed me to intentionally disrupt the rhythm and look at things through a different lens.”
Jamie Gmach
Owner, Evolving Solutions

I've been in your shoes and this podcast started as a way to learn what I could have done different.
A New Way to Think About Business
Owning a business shouldn’t mean sacrificing your freedom. Through the Independence by Design™ Ownership Framework. I’ll help you connect every decision you make—how you spend your time, how you manage cash flow, and how you build equity—to what really matters. It’s about designing your business to serve you, not the other way around.
Why I Do This
I’ve always been curious about what makes businesses—and the people who run them—tick. Whether it’s unpacking a complex financial model, diving into valuations, or exploring the psychology behind why owners make the decisions they do, I follow that curiosity wherever it leads.
Over the course of 425+ podcast interviews with thought leaders, entrepreneurs, and M&A experts, one thing has become clear: most people aren’t telling you the full story. My job is to cut through the noise, simplify the complex, and give you actionable insights you can actually use.
Sometimes that means breaking down the numbers to uncover what’s really driving value. Other times, it’s about listening to the journeys of authors, owners, and experts who share their successes, struggles, and everything in between.
No matter the topic, my goal is always the same: to connect what I uncover back to you. I want to give you the tools, stories, and strategies that help you run a business on your terms, achieve your goals, and create the time, cash flow, and wealth you deserve.
